In 1986 the State of Texas commemorated the sesquicentennial of Texas independence, marking 150 years since the events of the Texas Revolution and the establishment of the Republic of Texas in 1836. Winchester produced a number of Model 94 commemorative rifle variations recognizing the anniversary, typically featuring engraved receivers, decorative finishes, and markings referencing the Texas Sesquicentennial.

This rifle represents a highly embellished example of that commemorative production. The receiver and lever are finished in a brass tone, contrasted by a silver-tone barrel and engraved panels secured with brass screws. The left side of the receiver is engraved “TEXAS Sesquicentennial,” while the right side features the outline of the State of Texas containing “Texas 1836–1986.” The top of the barrel is engraved “Silver ★ Series,” and the tang is marked “Mercedes TX.” Ahead of the chamber the rifle is marked “1 of 3” indicating extremely limited production associated with this specific variation.

Additional decorative features include jeweled hammer and internal action surfaces, extensive scroll engraving, and a hooded brass front sight. The walnut buttstock carries a Texas 1836–1986 commemorative medallion set into the right side of the stock. The combination of brass and silver-tone components, along with the Mercedes TX and Silver Star Series markings, suggests a highly limited presentation or locality specific commemorative variation produced during the Texas Sesquicentennial year.

While documentation of other "1 of 500" Gold Star Series Texas Sesquicentennial models is abundant, none of such appear to exist for municipality specific editions or such low production counts – nor Silver Star Series. It is suspected this particular rifle was either special ordered, gifted to a prominent city official, or produced for some form of event/presentation.
