The Winchester Model 1886 is a lever action rifle designed by John Moses Browning and introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms in 1886. It was the first Browning designed lever action produced by Winchester, superseding the earlier Model 1876. The Model 1886 was specifically engineered to handle large, powerful cartridges that the toggle link actions of the Models 1873 and 1876 could not safely chamber. Browning's design uses dual vertical locking bolts that engage into the receiver walls, providing the strength necessary for cartridges such as .45-70 Government, .45-90, .40-82, and .50-110 Express. The rifle feeds from a full length tubular magazine beneath the barrel. Winchester produced approximately 160,000 Model 1886 rifles between 1886 and 1935.

This example bears serial number 39810, dating manufacture to 1890, and is chambered in .45-70 Government with a 26 inch octagon barrel. The receiver, barrel, magazine, and forend cap have been been refinished. The rifle is fitted with a walnut stock with a crescent steel buttplate and a walnut forend. Sights consist of a dovetailed blade front sight and semi buckhorn rear sight adjustable for elevation. No original box or accessories included.
