The Winchester Model 70 XTR Sporter is a bolt action rifle produced during the push feed era of Model 70 production, manufactured by U.S. Repeating Arms Company under license from Winchester. Production of the push feed Model 70 began in 1964, replacing the earlier pre-64 controlled round feed action with a redesigned push feed system utilizing a counterbored bolt face, plunger ejector, and sliding plate extractor. The XTR designation, introduced in the early 1980s, indicated an upgraded level of finish and wood quality within the Model 70 lineup. The Sporter configuration features a Monte Carlo walnut stock with cut checkering, satin wood finish, and a cheekpiece. The barreled action is finished in polished blue. The receiver is machined from carbon steel and is drilled and tapped for scope mounting. The rifle is equipped with a hooded ramp front sight and a folding rear sight. The trigger is the standard Model 70 adjustable trigger, and the safety is a three position thumb safety located on the bolt shroud. The rifle feeds from an internal box magazine with a hinged floorplate released by a catch inside the trigger guard.
