The .338 Winchester Magnum was developed on a belted magnum case and offered a significant increase in energy and bullet weight over standard calibers available in the Model 70 at the time, making it well suited for large and dangerous game at extended ranges. The Alaskan configuration featured a 25 inch barrel, a walnut stock with Monte Carlo cheekpiece, and front and rear iron sights. These rifles were originally built on the pre-1964 Model 70 action, which employs controlled round feed with a large non-rotating Mauser type claw extractor, a blade ejector machined into the left receiver rail, and a three position safety on the bolt shroud. The receiver is machined from forged steel and is factory drilled and tapped for scope mounting. The rifle feeds from an internal box magazine with a hinged floorplate.
