Winchester Model 1897 Riot Gun, 12 Gauge, 2 3/4" Chamber, 20" Barrel, Manufactured 1946
The Winchester Model 1897 is an exposed hammer pump action shotgun designed by John Moses Browning, produced by Winchester from 1897 through 1957. It was a refinement of the earlier Model 1893, strengthened to handle smokeless powder loads. The Model 1897 uses a solid steel receiver with a bottom loading, side ejecting tubular magazine and an external hammer that is cocked by the pump stroke. The action is slam fire capable. The riot gun configuration was produced with a 20 inch cylinder bore barrel intended for law enforcement, military, and defensive use. The Model 1897 saw extensive military service in both World Wars and remained in law enforcement armories for decades.
This example was manufactured in 1946 and is chambered in 12 gauge with a 2 3/4 inch chamber. It is fitted with a 20 inch barrel with a fixed cylinder bore choke and front bead sight. The finish is blued throughout, and it is fitted with a walnut stock and corn cob forend. No original box or accessories included.
