The Webley Mark IV is a double action/single action top break revolver chambered in .38 S&W (also designated .38/200 in British military service). The design uses a stirrup latch at the top of the frame to lock the barrel and cylinder assembly in the closed position. When unlatched, the barrel and cylinder pivot downward on a hinge at the front of the frame, simultaneously operating an automatic extractor that lifts spent cartridges from the cylinder. The Mark IV was produced by Webley & Scott Ltd. in Birmingham, England, and served as a standard British and Commonwealth military sidearm during the Second World War. Wartime production examples bear a "War Finish" marking on the left side of the frame, indicating manufacture with simplified finishing processes to increase production output. The .38/200 cartridge refers to the .38 S&W cartridge loaded with a 200 grain bullet, adopted by the British military in 1922 as a replacement for the larger .455 Webley cartridge used in earlier Webley revolvers.
