Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 27 .357 Magnum, 8 3/8" Barrel, Blued, Leather Presentation Case

The Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 27 is the designation applied to the .357 Magnum revolver produced by Smith & Wesson prior to the adoption of numeric model designations in 1957. Originally introduced in 1935 as the .357 Registered Magnum and later continued as the .357 Magnum, this revolver was the first production firearm chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge. Built on the large N frame, these revolvers were distinguished by a level of hand fitting and finish quality that set them apart from standard production guns of the era. Characteristic features include a checkered top strap on the frame and a checkered barrel rib, both of which served to reduce glare when sighting while also demonstrating the additional hand work invested in each revolver. The revolvers were finished with a deep, polished blue. The Pre-Model 27 was offered in a range of barrel lengths and could be ordered with a variety of grip and sight options. Following the 1957 transition to model numbers, the revolver continued as the Model 27.

This example, serial number S108048, is configured with an 8 3/8 inch barrel and a blued finish throughout. The revolver is fitted with smooth Goncalo Alves grips with S&W medallions. Sights consist of a blade front and a micrometer click adjustable rear. The revolver is accompanied by a factory letter and leather, felt lined presentation case with compartments containing cleaning tools and a screwdriver.
