Smith & Wesson Model 649-3 .357 Magnum, 2 1/8" Barrel, Stainless

The Smith & Wesson Model 649 is a double action/single action revolver built on the stainless steel J frame, introduced as the stainless steel counterpart to the blued Model 49 Bodyguard. The defining feature of the Model 649 is its shrouded hammer design, in which the frame extends upward on both sides of the hammer spur, enclosing it within a protective shroud while leaving a narrow slot that still permits the hammer to be manually cocked for single action fire. This configuration protects the hammer from snagging on clothing or holster material during a draw stroke while preserving the option of single action use. The Model 649 was originally chambered in .38 Special; the -3 engineering change designation reflects the transition to .357 Magnum chambering on a strengthened J frame, allowing the revolver to fire both .357 Magnum and .38 Special cartridges. The revolver uses fixed sights consisting of a serrated ramp front sight integral to the barrel and a fixed notch rear sight machined into the top strap of the frame.

This example is a Model 649-3, product code 103210, produced as Special Order 8120. The revolver is chambered in .357 Magnum with a 2 1/8 inch barrel and a stainless steel finish throughout. It is fitted with Uncle Mike's Combat style rubber grips. Original box included.
