The Smith & Wesson Model 629 Mountain Gun is a double action/single action revolver chambered in .44 Remington Magnum, built on the large N frame. Introduced in 1989 as a collaboration between Smith & Wesson and noted outdoor writer and revolver authority Ross Seyfried, the Mountain Gun was conceived as a practical field revolver for hunters, packers, and backcountry travelers who required .44 Magnum capability without the bulk and weight of a full underlug 629. The defining characteristic of the Mountain Gun is its 4 inch tapered barrel, a profile that recalls pre-war Smith & Wesson revolvers and sheds considerable weight forward of the cylinder, shifting the balance point rearward and producing a revolver that carries far more comfortably on the hip during long days afield. The Mountain Gun is fitted with a ramp front sight and a micrometer click adjustable rear sight. The 629-3 engineering change incorporated the new style barrel thread and yoke retention system. These early Mountain Guns use a traditional hammer-mounted firing pin and do not incorporate the frame mounted internal lock that Smith & Wesson introduced in 2001.
