The Smith & Wesson 5906 is a full size, double action/single action semi automatic pistol chambered in 9mm. Introduced in 1989 as part of S&W's third generation semi automatic pistol lineup, the 5906 succeeded the Model 659 and incorporated the refinements that defined the third generation series, including a slide mounted decocking lever that also functions as an ambidextrous safety, a firing pin block safety, and improved magazine feed geometry. The pistol operates on a short recoil, modified Browning cam lock system. The frame and slide are constructed entirely of stainless steel, providing corrosion resistance suited for duty and service environments. The 5906 uses a 4 inch barrel and feeds from a double stack magazine. The third generation S&W pistols saw widespread adoption among law enforcement agencies throughout the 1990s, with the 5906 being one of the most commonly issued variants due to its stainless construction and 9mm chambering.
