Smith & Wesson Model 586-2 Barry Goldwater Edition .357 Magnum, #41 of 100, Wood Display Case

The Smith & Wesson Model 586 is a double action/single action revolver built on the L frame, introduced in 1981 alongside its stainless steel counterpart, the Model 686. The L frame was developed specifically to handle sustained .357 Magnum use, providing a frame size intermediate between the smaller K frame and the larger N frame. The Model 586 features a blued carbon steel construction, a full underlug barrel that adds forward weight for improved balance and recoil control, and adjustable sights consisting of a red ramp front sight and a micrometer click adjustable rear sight. The -2 engineering change designation, introduced in 1987, reflects internal modifications including the adoption of a new yoke retention system and other refinements to the action.

The Barry Goldwater Edition was produced as a limited commemorative run of 100 revolvers by Smith & Wesson for the American Firearms Training Foundation. Barry Morris Goldwater served as a United States Senator from Arizona from 1953 to 1965 and again from 1969 to 1987, and was the Republican Party's presidential nominee in 1964. A lifelong advocate of firearms rights and individual liberty, Goldwater was a founding figure in the modern American conservative movement. His association with the American Firearms Training Foundation, an organization dedicated to firearms education and safety training, made him a fitting honoree for this commemorative edition.

This example is number 41 of 100. The right side of the frame is engraved with the Arizona state flag emblem and the edition number "41 of 100." The right side of the barrel is engraved with "Goldwater Edition" along with a reproduction of Barry Goldwater's signature. The left side of the barrel is engraved with "American Firearms Training Foundation." The revolver is accompanied by a wood display case with a commemorative plaque.
