The Savage Model 99 is a hammerless lever action rifle first introduced in 1899 as the Model 1899, representing a significant departure from contemporary lever action designs. The action uses a rotary magazine rather than a tubular magazine, allowing the safe use of pointed (spitzer) bullets that would be of concern in a tubular magazine where cartridge tips rest against the primer of the round ahead. The rotary magazine also incorporates a brass cartridge counter visible through a window on the left side of the receiver, indicating the number of rounds remaining. The action is operated by a lever that drops a breechblock rather than a toggle link bolt, and the rifle fires from a cocked internal striker rather than an external hammer. The .300 Savage cartridge was developed by Savage in 1920 specifically for the Model 99 platform, designed to approximate .30-06 Springfield ballistics in a cartridge short enough to function through the Model 99 action. 

This example was manufactured circa 1952-1953 and is chambered in .300 Savage with a 24 inch barrel. The rifle is fitted with a checkered walnut pistol grip stock and checkered walnut rounded forend, and features a brass cartridge counter on the left side of the receiver. The lever is color case hardened. The front sight is a gold bead blade, though the rear sight has been removed. No original box or accessories included.
