The Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy is a double stack 2011 style semi automatic pistol chambered in 9mm, combining a 1911 operating system with a modern double stack magazine well and polymer grip module. The pistol operates on a short recoil, locked breech system with a single action hammer fired trigger mechanism and uses a bull barrel without a barrel bushing. The frame is forged steel mated to a polymer grip module that accepts double stack staggered column magazines. The slide is machined from carbon steel and is cut from the factory to accept optics via interchangeable mounting plates. The compensated variant adds a factory compensator to the muzzle end of the 4.25 inch barrel, venting propellant gas upward to reduce muzzle rise. The compensator is housed within the extended dust cover, which incorporates an integral Picatinny accessory rail. The Prodigy features a curved trigger, ambidextrous thumb safeties, an extended beavertail grip safety, and a white dot front sight paired with a tactical rack U-notch rear sight.
