Remington 700 Classic .220 Swift, 24 Inch Barrel, MFG 1992
The Remington Model 700 Classic is a limited production variant within the Model 700 lineup, produced annually from 1981 through 2005, each year chambered in a different cartridge. The Classic is distinguished by its straight comb American walnut stock without a cheekpiece, satin finish on the wood, cut checkering on the pistol grip and forend, and a polished blue finish on the barreled action. The action is Remington's push feed design with a counterbored bolt face, sliding plate extractor, and plunger ejector. The receiver is machined from carbon steel and is drilled and tapped for scope mounting. The trigger is Remington's standard adjustable rifle trigger, and the safety is a two position thumb safety mounted on the right rear of the receiver. The rifle feeds from an internal box magazine with a hinged floorplate released by a catch inside the trigger guard. Each year's chambering was typically a one year production run, making individual caliber offerings collectible within the series.
This example is chambered in .220 Swift, the caliber offered for the 1992 production year. The .220 Swift was introduced by Winchester in 1935 and was the first factory loaded rifle cartridge to exceed 4,000 feet per second, making it one of the highest velocity commercially produced cartridges. The barrel measures 24 inches and the bolt body is jeweled. The barrel date code contains "M" corresponding to 1992 manufacture. The receiver is fitted with one inch scope rings. No original box or accessories included.
