The SP101 uses a solid frame construction with a side opening cylinder and a triple locking cylinder latch that engages at the front, rear, and bottom of the crane for consistent lockup and alignment. When chambered in .327 Federal Magnum, the SP101 gains a six round cylinder capacity rather than the five rounds typical of the same frame in .357 Magnum or .38 Special configurations. The .327 Federal Magnum operates at high pressures and produces velocity and energy approaching .357 Magnum levels from a smaller bore diameter, while generating less felt recoil and muzzle blast. The .327 Federal Magnum chamber also accepts .32 H&R Magnum, .32 S&W Long, and .32 S&W cartridges, providing a wide range of ammunition options from mild to full power. The SP101 incorporates Ruger's transfer bar safety mechanism, allowing all six chambers to be safely carried loaded.
