The Ruger New Vaquero is a single action revolver produced by Sturm, Ruger & Co., introduced in 2005 as a refined successor to the original Vaquero. The New Vaquero is built on a mid-frame platform that is smaller and lighter than the large frame used by the original Vaquero and Blackhawk, bringing its proportions closer to those of the Colt Single Action Army. This reduction in frame size makes the New Vaquero more comfortable for extended shooting sessions and better suited to traditional holsters dimensioned for the SAA. The revolver uses a reverse indexing pawl, a beveled cylinder for easier loading, and Ruger's transfer bar safety mechanism, which allows all six chambers to be safely carried loaded. The New Vaquero uses fixed sights consisting of a blade front sight and a fixed notch rear sight machined into the top strap, maintaining the clean, traditional profile of a 19th century single action revolver without the adjustable sight apparatus found on target oriented Ruger models.
