Bodeo Model 1889 10.35mm Italian Ordnance, Folding Trigger, Mida Gia. Castel Brescia, MFG 1918
The Bodeo Model 1889, formally designated the Revolver Modello 1889, was adopted as the standard sidearm of the Royal Italian Army in 1889 and served through both World Wars. Designed under the direction of Carlo Bodeo, the revolver is a solid frame, double action design chambered in the 10.35x20mm Italian Ordnance cartridge. The Bodeo was produced in two principal configurations distinguished by their trigger systems and barrel profiles. The folding trigger variant, commonly referred to as the enlisted or Tipo A model, uses a trigger that folds forward flush against the frame when not in use and deploys rearward into firing position when pulled in double action. This variant has no trigger guard and features an octagonal barrel. The other configuration, the trigger guard or Tipo B variant intended for officers and NCOs, uses a conventional trigger with a trigger guard and a round barrel profile. Both variants load and unload through a loading gate on the right side of the frame, one cartridge at a time, with a frame mounted ejector rod used to push spent cases from each chamber individually. The cylinder holds six rounds. Production was carried out by numerous Italian manufacturers, both state arsenals and private contractors, primarily concentrated in and around Brescia. During the First World War, demand for sidearms expanded rapidly, and the Italian government contracted with a large number of private Brescian firms to supplement state arsenal output. These wartime contract revolvers are commonly encountered with the markings of their respective private manufacturers.
This example is the folding trigger variant, manufactured by Mida Gia. Castel, Brescia, and dated 1918, placing it within the period of expanded wartime production during the First World War. It features an octagonal barrel, solid steel frame with loading gate, and folding trigger without trigger guard. No additional accessories included.
