Colt Single Action Army Lawman Series Pat Garrett .45 Colt, 5.5" Barrel, Nickel & Gold, 271 of 500, MFG 1968, Presentation Case

The Colt Lawman Series was a group of four commemorative Single Action Army revolvers issued by Colt between 1968 and 1971, each honoring a prominent figure of the American frontier: Pat Garrett (1968), Wild Bill Hickok (1969), Wyatt Earp (1970), and Bat Masterson (1971). Each edition was chambered in .45 Colt and produced in a limited run of 500 units. The Pat Garrett edition was the first issue in the series.

Pat Garrett served as sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, and is best known for killing Henry McCarty, widely known as Billy the Kid, at Fort Sumner, New Mexico on July 14, 1881. Garrett had previously captured Billy the Kid in December of 1880, but the outlaw escaped from the Lincoln County jail in April of 1881, killing two deputies in the process. Garrett tracked him to the home of Pete Maxwell at Fort Sumner, where the encounter ended the life of one of the most notorious figures of the American West. Garrett himself was shot and killed in 1908 near Las Cruces, New Mexico under circumstances that remained disputed for decades.

This example is serial number 271PGP, number 271 of 500 produced. The revolver features a 5.5 inch barrel with a nickel finish on the barrel, front sight, frame, and grip frame, and a gold finish on the ejector rod housing, cylinder pin, cylinder, hammer, trigger, and associated hardware. The top of the barrel is engraved "Colt's P.T.F.A MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." and the right side of the barrel is engraved "LAWMAN SERIES - PAT GARRETT". The left side of the barrel is marked "COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45". The revolver is fitted with pearlite grips with gold Colt medallion inserts. Accompanied by the original black Colt leatherette presentation case marked "THE LAWMAN SERIES" and "Pat Garrett" with a gold stenciled image of Pat Garrett on the lid, and Pat Garrett themed manual.
