It was designed as an ultra compact concealed carry pistol, utilizing a short recoil, locked breech operating system with a linkless barrel. The double action only trigger mechanism has no external safety lever or decocking lever, relying on the long, consistent trigger pull as the primary safety feature along with an internal firing pin block. The Pocket Nine was part of Colt's effort to compete in the growing subcompact 9mm pistol market of the era. Production numbers were relatively limited, and the model was discontinued after a short production run.
