Colt 1902 Military Model .38 ACP, MFG 1917
The Colt Model 1902 Military is a full size semi-automatic pistol chambered in .38 ACP, designed by John Moses Browning. It operates on a short recoil, parallel ruler locking system with a pivoting barrel link, feeding from an 8-round single stack magazine. The 1902 Military was developed as an evolution of the earlier Colt 1900 and 1902 Sporting models, incorporating changes intended for military adoption including a longer grip frame to fully house the magazine, a slide stop, and a lanyard loop on the grip. The pistol uses a 6 inch barrel and a single action trigger mechanism. Early production examples used a rounded hammer, while later production transitioned to a spur hammer with a checkered surface. The 1902 Military was produced by Colt from 1902 through 1929, with approximately 18,068 units manufactured. It saw limited U.S. military procurement and served as an important developmental step toward the Colt 1911.
Based on its serial number, this example was likely was manufactured in early 1917 and is fitted with a checkered spur hammer consistent with later production. The pistol presents a deep, glossy blue black finish with a very smooth surface throughout. The trigger face has saw tooth style serrations cut into it, and the lanyard loop at the base of the grip has been plugged with a pin. Left side slide markings are faded, while right side slide markings are not present, however, the serial number is notably sharp and well defined. Taken together with the depth and uniformity of the finish, as well as its minor modifications, it is suspected that this pistol has been refinished. Accompanied by one magazine, no original box or accessories included.
