The AKS-74U is the compact member of the AK-74 family and saw extensive use within Soviet and later Russian forces, particularly among airborne units, armored vehicle crews, and various security and interior ministry troops. Its compact dimensions made it suitable for roles in which a full length rifle was impractical while still maintaining compatibility with the 5.45x39 service cartridge and standard AK-74 magazines. The design uses a significantly shortened barrel and gas system combined with its distinctive dust cover and side folding triangle stock.

The Arsenal SLR-104UR is a Bulgarian AKS-74U pattern rifle manufactured by Arsenal AD of Kazanlak and imported into the United States. This example is configured with its traditional furniture including a triangle side folding stock, bakelite pistol grip, and wood handguards. This rifle is paired with a Molot 45-round bakelite RPK-74 magazine.
